Hayley Xenophontos, Xenos Haven

Summary

Hairdresser Hayley Xenophontos came to Bubble as a volunteer at our social enterprise, Bubble Café. Following a number of challenges in her personal and professional life, Hayley sought to rebuild her confidence and, with the help of the Bubble advisers, re-establish her career. Now, three years on, Hayley runs a successful hairdressing business just next door to the Bubble Café in Stockport.

Challenges

Hayley approached the Bubble team in 2016 on the lookout for volunteering work, having heard about the opportunities at the Bubble Café. Hayley hoped to rebuild her confidence and work on her personal development following a series of challenges that had led to a mental health breakdown and potential homelessness.

Hayley’s previous business had become unsustainable when she and her business partner parted ways. Her situation soon spiralled and she found herself in need of medical help. As she recovered, Hayley decided to ease herself back into work by volunteering, with the hope of rebuilding her confidence.

Bubble worked with Hayley to meet the following objectives:

  1. Build confidence and develop transferable skills
  2. Provide advice and support to help Hayley back into work
  3. Help Hayley earn a sustainable income by re-establishing her business

The process

After a few months of volunteering at the Bubble Café, Hayley had established herself as an invaluable team member. The Bubble advisers learned of Hayley’s past challenges, both in business and in her personal life, and supported her goal of re-establishing a hairdressing business when she was ready.

When the time came, Hayley’s application for business funding was unsuccessful. The Bubble advisers were then able to offer the practical advice and help necessary to reverse the decision and ensure that Hayley received the funds she needed to get her new business off the ground.

The premises next door to the café became available to let and, with Bubble’s help, Hayley was able to secure the space and establish her own hairdressing business.

Outcomes

We established the Bubble Café as a social enterprise, with the aim of helping volunteers facing mental health challenges re-enter the mainstream. With the help of our advisers, Hayley was able to rebuild her confidence to do just that, and several years later runs her own thriving business, Xenos Haven.

Applying for business funding isn’t always easy to get right; we were able to help Hayley in this area, laying the foundations necessary to get the venture up and running. Hayley has since been able to generate a sustainable income for herself and her staff, and achieve security for her family.
